Keywords
On the internet, keywords are a fundamental tool that should be used no matter what you
want to market.
Keywords are a very handy tool when you are selecting a product to market online. If there is no demand, then there is little reason to build a site around a topic. Don't get fixated on a topic just because you like it.
It is also important to note how long the keyword list is and how many related keywords there are to work with, as well as how quickly the counts falls off as you go down the list.
Checking to see how strong the competition is in a market for your keywords is also an important step. While a healthy amount of competition is good, indicating that there is probably money to be made, too much competition can make the job of promoting and ultimately getting positioning in the search engines and traffic a real grind.
Once you have some possible keywords, go to the search engines and see who the competition is, and how many pages of competitive sites there are. Also pay notice to the number of adwords. If there are many advertisers, then it is probably a good market if the competition is not too stiff.
Consider also the time of year in relation to what you are planning to market. Some areas of marketing are seasonal. Keywords in these markets will have a higher count when the season is appropriate. Take for example taxes. If your product relates to taxes the keyword counts will be higher after Christmas and through spring when tax season basically ends. This applies to many products that are related to a holiday or a specific season of the year.
Choose the keywords for your webpages carefully, they will be with your site for a long time and they are what pull traffic. Choose them carefully and find as many related words as possible to mix into your copy to make it flow more naturally.
Maintain a balance. While you want a reasonably good keyword density, if you get too carried away the search engines may penalize you.
